Consolidation Should Not Erase Individual Package History
A dispatch contains several customer packages. One is removed for review before departure. The destination team later asks what actually traveled.
If the platform stores only the group's current contents, the answer may be lost.
GS1 identifies each logistics unit with an SSCC, and GS1 Singapore's shipping-management material describes relationships between units, shipments, and consolidated consignments. In our view, an SSCC should not be treated as interchangeable with a parcel carrier's tracking number. GS1 logistics-unit explanation, GS1 Singapore shipping management.
Define the identities your business uses
Our recommendation is to distinguish the individual package, any physical grouping, the onward shipment, and external references. The exact model follows your process and partner requirements; adopting every identifier standard is not a prerequisite for a small internal workflow.
What matters is that grouping does not destroy the identity staff need for billing, customer updates, and exception handling.
Record changes to membership
For a hypothetical removal, retain the package involved, the group, the time, the reason, and the responsible action. Define which downstream records must change and whether the group needs review again.
If a group departs, do not automatically assume that every package ever assigned to it departed. The status should follow the verified membership and operational evidence at that handoff.
Test a difficult dispatch
Walk through a normal consolidation, a removed package, a held item, and a destination discrepancy. Ask:
- Which record explains what was expected?
- Which confirms what was handed over?
- Can staff trace a package independently of the group?
- Can billing distinguish services performed on the package from services charged to the group?
These questions reveal requirements that a simple “add to consolidation” button can miss. Explore Cross-Border Logistics or review a handoff with Blinkshift.
