A Payment Update Should Not Release the Same Package Twice
A customer pays an invoice. The forwarding platform releases the package and notifies the destination team. Later, the same payment event arrives again.
Should the operational actions run again?
Stripe documents that webhook events can be repeated and are not guaranteed to arrive in generation order. It also instructs developers to verify that events come from Stripe before acting on them. Those documented behaviors make “one delivery equals one business action” an unsafe assumption for that integration. Other providers need their own review. Stripe webhook guidance.
Define the business condition for release
Our recommendation is to identify the required payment state, amount, currency, invoice or account, and any nonpayment holds. A browser redirect alone should not establish the financial state that authorizes release.
Payment received and package eligible to move are separate questions. A package could be paid but still need an operational review.
Make the action safe to repeat
The integration needs a durable way to recognize handled events and ensure the relevant business action is not applied twice. Verification, state updates, and downstream actions must be designed for the provider's documented behavior and the application's failure cases.
In a hypothetical replay, receiving the event again should not create another release instruction or another invoice adjustment. It should also not hide a previous partial failure that still needs attention.
Test recovery as well as success
Review a valid payment, repeated delivery, out-of-order information, an invalid signature, and a processing failure after part of the work completed. Verify that the financial record and operational queue tell a consistent story.
Provide a reconciliation path for unresolved cases. An accepted webhook does not prove every downstream action completed successfully.
Keep the business decision understandable to finance and operations; engineering then implements the required controls. Discuss the payment-to-release handoff or explore Cross-Border Logistics.
